I couldn’t be happier with the hardwareside of this motherboard. www.hardware-test.dk i845 Chipset Roundup October Just over a month ago Intel released a new chipset for the Pentium 4 platform codenamed “Brookdale”, the Brookdale is now known as the i845 and was officially announced on the 10th of September this year. The i845 was designed to help Intel conquer the mainstream sector of the market where the P4 was currently failing to provide a reasonable performance versus price ratio. The i845 chipset utilizes SDR-RAM, which is a far more economical solution than Intel’s current i850 chipset that is deigned strictly for the use of RD-RAM only. Unfortunately Intel has been forced to use RD-RAM because of a contract they signed with Rambus which means Intel cannot develop any chipsets with memory bandwidths over 1.06GB/s until 2002. Both the Athlon and the Pentium IV employ source synchronous clock technology; the Athlon with it's 266MHz DDR FSB; the Pentium IV with it's 400MHz FSB. However, a 133MHz FSB is the limit for Socket-370 processors. Running at 1 GHz, the chip is expected to be 1.7x faster in SPECint2000 than the 800 MHz Itanium. Among other improvements, McKinley has a 3 MB L3 cache integrated on-chip with a 12 cycle latency (compared to Itanium's 20). Considering McKinley is expected to be 1.7x faster than Itanium with only a 200 MHz lead in clockrate, much of the improvement obviously has to do with the chip's improved execution resources and cache/memory implementation. On the execution side of things, there are now 6 integer units, as opposed to Itanium's 4. The FSB has also seen improvements, as it is now 400 MHz @ 128-bit, providing 6.4 GB/s to Itanium's 2.1 GB/s. www.aceshardware.com AMD-760 Chipset To Be Discontinued (AMD) According to this report by c't, AMD is planning to discontinue production of the AMD-760 chipset, which is the company's uniprocessor DDR SDRAM Athlon chipset. VIA klonuje intelovské Pentium 4 Klonovat? Obvykle pod tímto pojmem rozumíme zcela identickou kopii originálu. To si ale Intel zcela určitě nenechá líbit. A nebo snad ano? www.svethardware.cz Výkon, to není jen procesor V současné době můžeme sledovat, jak se Intel a AMD předhání, kdo bude mít rychlejší procesor, kdo vyšší taktovací frekvenci. Jako by se zapomínalo na to, že nejen frekvence, na které běží procesor, je tím nejdůležitějším limitem pro rychlost počítače. Dnes je velmi limitující přístup do paměti. Deska Jetway 866AS není rozhodně žádné „ořezávátko“ a postavit na ní výkonný systém není až takový problém. Není jenom Abit… Do redakce se nám dostala základní deska nepříliš známého výrobce, ale svými výkony nás velmi překvapila! VIA má zatím jediného spojence!
