With the revised chipset Via has given the competition something to aim for. The AMD 761 is an incredible chipset in of itself, but it just didn't seem to take full advantage of DDR technology, not that the KT266a chipset does, but it's a step forward in the right direction

KT266 versus KT266A Chipset Performance comparison..
Since I am now in possession of both a version 2 (KT266) and a version 3.1 (KT266A) Shuttle AK31 motherboards I thought it might be interesting to directly compare them, especially the memory bandwidth. When VIA first released the KT266 chipset there was widespread criticism of the memory bandwidth of the chipset, with most people reporting figures only 10% or so better than the older KT133A chipset.

FIC Motherboard Shows Off ATI "A3" Chipset
First International Computer (FIC) Corp. has begun showing off its first motherboard based upon the forthcoming integrated chipset from ATI Technologies Inc., the A3. According to executives at the Taiwan motherboard manufacturer, the AT31 board will begin shipping in the first quarter of 2002, followed by a second board designed for the Pentium 4 market a quarter later.

Ceny pamětí již dorazily do cíle?
Snad celým počítačovým světem probleskla zpráva (jako z čistého nebe) že ceny pamětí až neuvěřitelně narůstají. A nebylo výjimkou i stoprocentní zdražení právě těch nejžádanějších pamětí. Mnozí pak předpovídali další zdražování, ale namísto toho se děje něco jiného...

DDR333 paměti se začínají dodávat ve velkém
Včera informovala společnost Nanya, že začíná masově dodávat DDR333 chipy. Jen od začátku tohoto měsíce Nanya vyprodukovala 120 tisíc DDR333 paměťových chipů o kapacitě 128 Mbit. V japonsku se už dokonce dají koupit hotové PC2700 DDR SDRAMy s chipy právě od Nanyi. V ostatních regionech se zatím neobjevily, ale je jen otázkou času, kdy se tak stane (že bychom zavedli sázkovou kancelář na tipování, kdy se objeví poprvé u nás? :))
Ostatní výrobci paměťových chipů už také oznámili, že začnou brzo produkovat DDR333 chipy ve velkém, ale Nanya byla první. A rozhodně je to zapotřebí, protože se začínají prodávat první základní desky, které tyto paměti dokáží využít. Jde o motherboardy s chipsetem SiS645.

Ceny pamětí klesají
Konkrétně například chip 16Mbit x 8, 128Mbit PC133 SDRAM, jehož cena se během jednoho týdne zdvojnásobila z 85 centů na 1.7 dolaru, měl v pátek cenu už "jen" 1.5 dolaru. Navíc se objevila i velmi optimistická předpověď: původní ceny pamětí můžeme čekat začátkem příštího měsíce.

A vítězem se stává... Celeron!
Nedávná diskuze s kolegou který je léta je příznivcem Intelu a právě nyní uvažuje o upgradu počítače, mi připomněla, jak málo je známo poslední "šedé káčátko", jež se skrývá mezi procesory Intelu - tak totiž můžeme nazvat typ, který se dnes, mezi procesory jež "jsou inside", vyznačuje snad nejlepším poměrem ceny k výkonu. Ano, mluvím o Celeronu 1,2 GHz - o dobře zamaskovaném Pentiu III, které si dnes můžete koupit za polovinu ceny "normálního" P3.
